TAI CHI Lowers Blood Pressure

I do not push TAI CHI for everyone. Some people need the 'burn' of aerobics and weight training to keep them motivated. But, TAI CHI has benefits that are not found in other health maintenance campaigns. The exercise is safe for people at all levels of fitness, at all stages of life, and in all age groups.

It is fairly easy to learn, and you cannot hurt yourself if you do it wrong. Consult your doctor if you are worried, or if you already have health problems. There is very little to learn. I learned enough to stay fit in less than two hours.

High Blood Pressure and Tai Chi Therapy

Way back in 2003, the Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine’s Oct. 9th issue reported a study finding that Tai Chi “could decrease blood pressure and results in favorable lipid profile changes and improve subjects' anxiety status. Therefore, Tai Chi could be used as an alternative modality in treating patients with mild hypertension, with a promising economic effect.” This study laid out a way to save our society, perhaps billions of dollars annually, and possibly save some patients with mild chronic hypertension the potential negative side effects of chronic lifelong medication. However, this largely hasn’t occurred.

I caught a glimpse why when I was staying in the beautiful mountain town of Otavala, Ecuador, with a woman known for her knowledge of traditional Indian medicines. A tour of young American medical students stopped here to listen and learn from the Indian woman’s tour of her herbal gardens. As I followed them, I asked a group of young bright medical students if they were aware that Tai Chi was found to reduce high blood pressure. One lovely young woman replied, “Oh, yes, I’ve heard that, but I would never prescribe it.”

I asked why, and she responded that she couldn’t because she didn’t know if it would work. Although Tai Chi studies do show that Tai Chi indeed helps lower high blood pressure, it is true that it does not reduce it in every person. However, it is also true that every drug prescription does not work on every person either. I suggested to the young medical student that she consider that many times I’ve been to the doctor, and he’s pulled out a prescription pad and explained, “Let’s give this a try, and see how it works for you, and if it doesn’t do the job, we’ll try something else.” Most of us are familiar with this, and by the confused look on the student’s face, I’m assuming her memory banks were bringing up similar images.

So, why are our medical universities giving students the impression that they should not be prescribing Tai Chi, since we know it can help lower high blood pressure for many, who if it is successful with them, can enjoy a lifetime free of chronic and costly medications? And not only do that, but offer a plethora of GOOD SIDE EFFECTS including a stronger immune system and healthier respiratory system. This is a deep and important question we need to be asking as patients and consumers, and health professionals must begin asking this question regularly in order to fulfill the duties of their Hippocratic oath. For, today we have even a much better understanding of Tai Chi’s potential than we did a few years ago, so ignorance or inconclusive data is not an acceptable explanation from our medical universities that train our future doctors, without teaching them about Tai Chi research, and what it portends for their future patients.

Today, we are clearer on exactly why Tai Chi is such a powerful therapy for high blood pressure sufferers. In a March 17, 2005, article by the Mayo Clinic staff posted at mayoclinic.com they lay out what a “stress response” is, and the effects it has on the body. This is at the core of high blood pressure problems and the physical changes chronic stress responses illicite that creates or aggravates hypertensive conditions.

In their article, they explain that a stress response, or “fight or flight” reaction involves our pituitary gland releasing adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which sets a domino effect signaling other glands to produce additional hormones, such as adrenal glands which flood the blood stream with stress hormones, such as “cortisol” and “adrenaline.”

When ordinary life’s daily frustrations trigger this effect over and over again, the results can be damaging to the mind and body. Many of us experience this domino effect of triggers and hormones daily, which is why about 1/3 of Americans, or over 90 million Americans, suffer from high blood pressure.

Cutting edge scientists like Dr. Herbert Benson, President of the Mind/Body Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, are discovering a stunning reality through their research. In a wonderful article by Jeanie Lerche Davis at WebMD Medical News entitled The Mysterious 'Medication' of Meditation (http://my.webmd.com/content/article/25/1728_
57992.htm), she writes of how such researchers are discovering that “meditation can indeed be medication – creating long lasting physiciolgical effects that reduce high blood pressure and even help unclog arteries to reverse heart disease.”

Dr. Benson, who is also associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, sought to prove how this effect could be shown objectively, and had five long-time meditation practitioners take MRI brain scans while meditating. Dr. Benson informed WebMD in the aforementioned article by Davis, "There was a striking quietude across the entire brain which was documented through MRI . . . The areas of the brain that became active from that quietude were those that control metabolism, heart rate, etc., . . . We knew meditation caused a relaxation response, but we couldn't prove it. We knew that if you thought in a certain way, with repetition, that physiologic changes would occur in the body. Here now is proof that mind, in the form of repetition, is affecting the brain, which affects the body . . . "

Stroke Magazine reported on a study funded by the National Institutes of Health, conducted by Dr. Amparo Castillo-Richmond, from the Maharishi University, more specifically on high blood pressure afflicting black people. The meditating group saw a reduction in the thickness of one of the arteries that supplied blood to the brain. Which indicates that blood flow is increasing. The group only using diet and exercise saw their artery walls getting thicker, which indicated that less blood was flowing through to the brain. This finding led Dr. Castillo-Richmond to make the profoundly exciting assertion, "It's possible to reverse heart disease through meditation."
In fact, not only hypertension, but up to 90% of other illnesses sending us to the doctor are being caused by stress, according to Dr. Herbert Benson. Which makes Dr. Benson’s and Dr. Castillo-Richmond’s findings that meditative techniques can so dramatically alter our stress producing “fight or flight” response in healthy ways even more wonderful.

Dr. Benson explains, that the relaxation response triggered by repetitive forms [like tai chi, yoga, etc.] can result in decreased metabolism, heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, and also slower brain waves.” Benson asserts that it is the repetitive nature of acts like praying the rosary, yoga, or tai chi’s physical repetitive muscular actions that provides the profound hope for reducing anxiety, mild and moderate depression, anger and hostility, hypertension, cardiac irregularities, and all forms of pain, which are made worse by stress.

This concept of Tai Chi being an effective tool for reducing or even avoiding incidence of high blood pressure or other illnesses all together, is echoed elsewhere. Mayoclinic.com also recommends Tai Chi for relaxation training in an article entitled, “Relax: Techniques to help you achieve tranquility” which also explains why relaxation is important and what you might experience by practicing tools that will help you relax.

They detail how you can improve body responses to stress, such as: Slowing your heart rate; Reducing blood pressure; Slowing your breathing rate; Reducing the need for oxygen; Increasing blood flow to the major muscles; Lessening muscle tension.

They go on to explain that practicing relaxation techniques may help you experience: Fewer symptoms of illness, such as headaches, nausea, diarrhea and pain; Few emotional responses such as anger, crying, anxiety, apprehension and frustration; More energy; Improved concentration; Greater ability to handle problems; More efficiency in daily activities.
So, time and time again as we begin to examine one particular benefit of Tai Chi, such as lowering high blood pressure, we see a whole universe of potential opening up before us.

An article from Archives of Internal Medicine, as reported on NBC’s local WCAU Health (http://wcau-tvhealth.ip2m.com/index.cfm?pt=itemDetail&Item_ID=112735&Site_Cat_ID=77) explained a Tai Chi research program at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston revealed a great deal. The article authors wrote, "Overall, these studies reported that long-term Tai Chi practice had favorable effects on the promotion of balance control, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness and reduced the risk of falls in elders . . . Cardiovascular and respiratory function improvements were noted in healthy people and those who had undergone coronary artery bypass surgery as well as people with heart failure, hypertension, acute myocardial infarction, arthritis and multiple sclerosis . . . Benefit was also found for balance, strength, and flexibility in older subjects; falls in frail elderly subjects; and pain, stress and anxiety in healthy subjects.” They add the actual ways that Tai Chi provides these benefits are not well known.

The fact is that less than .5% of the National Institute of Health’s budget goes to research alternative therapies, leaving yoga, meditation, tai chi, massage, herbal therapy, aroma therapy, and the entire massive field of alternative health systems to struggle over .5%, or a little over $100 million of the $28 billion (approx.) annual budget. Given the above studies, it boggles the mind that such a small portion of the health research dollars are going to Tai Chi.

To recap, about 1/3 of the American population suffers high blood pressure. Tai Chi is proven to be a beneficial therapy that not only has no bad side effects, but dramatically improves immune function, respiratory function, lowers the incidence of anxiety and depression, and profoundly improves the balance of practitioners. Tai Chi does more, but for our purposes here these profound realities are enough to show exactly why it is truly unbelievable that Tai Chi is getting so little scrutiny in medical research dollars, when it can save so many from chronic suffering and perhaps some from a lifetime of chronic costly medications.

It is time we all began to ask the question that all good consumers should ask, “What is the best way/product for my health?” If Tai Chi is that product, the next question is, “Why isn’t every physician offering it as an option to their patients with hypertension, as a prescription?” “Why aren’t all insurance policies covering such prescriptions for Tai Chi?” Ask and ye shall receive. We must become informed and demanding health consumers, in order to get the best health options available.

This article does not advocate self-treatment, and encourages all to make health choices in conjunction with their physician. However, if your physician is close-minded to anything but a certain group of health options, even when research indicates your choices may be wider, than it is time to have a good talk with your physician about possibly widening your options.

No Need to Live With Flabby Arms Anymore

I had flabby arms. I looked in the mirror one day and thought, 'Those are my mother's arms.' I was a little shocked because it is the only part on my body that really looks old. What amazed me was how easy it is to get rid of flabby arms - without liposuction.

I started by placing 2 soup cans on my desk. Every day I lifted them above my shoulders a few times. I did this for a few weeks before I realized that I was helping my heart to...win-win.

How To Get Rid Of Flabby Arms

Hats off to a very brave women who stepped up and finally wanted to get rid of the flabby arms and the sooner the better. Luckily for her, this problem is quite common and the solution is quite simple and two-fold. Working to get rid of flabby arms comes with overall fitness but there's some specific exercises you can to in addition to reducing body fat that will bring those arms into super shape once again.

On just another normal day, I received an email with a cry for help.

"I would like to know how to build up the muscle around the humerous bones of the upper arms. I would like to know how to build up the muscle around the humerous bones of the upper arms. I want to get rid of flabby upper arms!"

For starters...

The muscle that is most problematic for flabby arms is called: The Tricep

Most women think of these things when it comes to that area:

* flabby arms * exercise for flabby arms * tone flabby arms * how to get rid of flabby arms * flabby arm help * flabby upper arms * etc

There are really two key concepts to that particular predicament. Keep in mind that this is such a common question so you are certainly not alone in this. But just keep reading because the answer is pretty simple and may surprise you!

First, get the idea out of your head that there's any such thing as 'spot reduction.' Meaning, if you do certain exercises for that area, the fat will magically disappear just from there and your arms will suddenly be taunt and tone again. Let me give you a real quick lesson on fat. Don't worry this is going to be easy.

Your body stores fat. It stores it in general areas that are common to you as a female. Most men store the most fat in their stomachs. Women tend to store it in their thighs, hips and buttocks. But with anything, you can and will store fat wherever. So the first thing you want to do is...

Reduce the body fat period!

Once you start to reduce fat, you'll see it disappear. Don't bother with creams and rubs and all the other gimmicks out there. You cannot spot reduce. Your body stores fat and the only way to reduce fat in any particular area that is bothering you is to reduce fat period from your body as a whole.

For all these reasons,...

Your first mission, should you choose to accept it, is to reduce the body fat.

Second, in order for that area of your arm to become tone, you'll want to build muscle in the back of the arm. That is called the Tricep and there's several good exercise you can do to build up that area.

But first, let me give you a list of some of the best exercises for flabby arms that will focus on the tricep and help you develop the area and make it stronger. This isn't all inclusive but it's some of the more common and better exercises you can do for the back of the arms.

* Weighted dips * Close grip bench press * Close grip push ups * Lying barbell French press * Overhead cable extensions * Cable press downs * Reverse cable press downs

Frankly...

Many people are caught up in the idea that in order for them to get rid of a problematic area they need to just work it out and do some exercises to target that area.

But that's only half of the solution as you've read.

By working out the area AND reducing body fat, you will progress at twice the speed and make twice the visual differences.

Let's suppose you only worked out the back of the arms. The muscle would be stronger and firmer no doubts, but it might not show IF your level of body fat is such that the muscle is still covered up.

As you see, by doing both, you will tone up (build) the tricep and make it more visible when the layer of fat that covers it up is reduced.

Men and women who want to reduce the 'flabby' anything simply have to realize that it's a combination of body fat in that area, maybe loose skin and a muscle that generally needs to be developed in order to be taunt.

But I'm getting way ahead of myself!

This is a two fold mission.

1- Reduce body fat

2- Do specific exercises to build muscle in the back of the arm so that once the fat is gone, you'll have a tricep and it will appear tight and tone

In a nutshell what this will do for you is make the back of your arms less flabby as the fat is lost from your body and the new muscle will bring added tone and tightness to the back of your arm.

The Easy Way to Avoid Health Problems

TAI CHI is easy for anyone to start learning, no matter how out of shape or overweight you are. It is easier than yoga, and can be done in your home. I learned my first lessons in TAI CHI from tapes borrowed from the library. There is no need to push to keep up with the class, and no pressure to preform to certain standards.

In fact, TAI CHI is something that can be done by beginners without being obvious newbies - like in an aerobics class. There is no strain on the knees or other joints. There is no pain. This is not a 'no pain no gain sport.' In fact, I've lost weight and built muscle after a heart operation while 'taking it easy.'

Bone Loss, Osteoporosis, Depression, Menopause & TAI CHI

Copyright © 2005 Bill Douglas
Emerging medical research indicates that an ancient health therapy may be the prescription for the future. Increasingly the menopausal problems of hormonal imbalance, often resulting in bone loss, are also affected by depression and stress. Change is stressful for all of us, even good changes, like changes of life. Maturity is a good thing, yet the stress of major life changes can result in stress and depression, which according to emerging research may further aggravate the uncomfortable symptoms of menopause. Is there any escape from this catch-22? Yes, although this may seem overwhelming in its scope, there may be great news. An ancient Chinese natural health therapy, known as Tai Chi, may help alleviate many of the aggravating symptoms of menopause in profoundly healthful ways.

Of course only your physician can help you decide what is right for your personal therapy as you enter the menopausal transition. However, you may find that you need to educate your physician regarding the benefits Tai Chi may offer you at this important time in your life. Or, perhaps if you ask around you may find a physician who has already educated himself or herself about the benefits Tai Chi may offer all women, but definitely has much to offer women entering menopause.

Emerging research indicates that Tai Chi can help reduce the incidence of depression, anxiety, and mood disturbance in regular practitioners. In a Prevention Magazine report entitled, “Tai Chi May Relieve Anxiety and Depression,” Donal P. O'Mathuna, Ph.D., a lecturer in Health Care Ethics at the School of Nursing in Dublin City University, Ireland says that, “. . . . evidence there is suggests that the benefits of tai chi extend beyond those of simply exercising. The combination of exercise, meditation, and breathing all may help relieve anxiety and depression. . .” In its article entitled, “Tai chi,” the Mayo Clinic staff at MayoClinic.com stated that preliminary research shows that practicing Tai Chi regularly may not only reduce anxiety and depression, but also increase bone mineral density after menopause. This was echoed by a report in http://www.intelihealth.com by Natural Standard and the Faculty of Harvard Medical School.

This is a very important finding, and begins to make even more sense, when you consider the National Institutes of Mental Health reports that the stress hormones found in depressed women caused bone loss that gave them bones of women nearly twice their age. Exactly why Tai Chi offers such benefit may be explained by a study from Australia’s La Trobe University that found that Tai Chi reduced levels of stress hormones more effectively than some other forms of activity. (Details at: www.seniornet.org/php/default.php?PageID=6055).

But, no matter how you slice it, research is indicating that Tai Chi may be a “very” effective multi-level beneficial therapy for women. A Chinese study reported in the December 2004 “Physician and Sportsmedicine” found that tai chi could retard bone loss among postmenopausal women significantly. Bone mineral density was measured before and after the study period. Both groups experienced general bone loss, but the rate of bone loss for the Tai Chi group was less than in the control group. In fact, the Tai Chi practicing group of women slowed bone loss by 2.6 to 3.6 times more. The study reported, “Bone loss was 2.6 to 3.6 times slower (p<.01) in the distal tibia in the [Tai Chi] exercise group compared with bone loss in the control group.” Back in 1999, before these studies began showing that Tai Chi may actually improve bone density, or at the least dramatically slow bone loss, the “Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery’s” 1999; 7:19-31, reported that “…Coupled with drug therapy should be a comprehensive approach to exercise and fall prevention. Stretching, strengthening, impact, and balance exercises are effective. Of the balance exercises, tai chi chuan has proved to be the most successful in decreasing falls..”

This was because falling injuries are a grave health risk for all aging Americans, but given the dangers of osteoporosis for women, an especially important concern. In fact the sixty leading cause of death for aging Americans is complication from falling injuries. However, research has shown time and time again in major medical studies, such as John’s Hopkins, that Tai Chi can reduce the incidence of falling injuries by 50% in those who practice Tai Chi. So, even before emerging research began to show that Tai Chi may contribute to stronger bones in menopausal women perhaps by reducing stress hormone levels and providing a gentle weight bearing exercise, it was know that Tai Chi was a powerful therapy to reduce falling injury. Now, there may be even more benefit ancient Chinese health therapies can offer to relieve the discomfort of life changes. Tai Chi is known as a general therapeutic form of “Qigong” (pronounced chee gung) exercise. Qigong means “energy exercise” or “breathing exercise” in Chinese.

This indicates that Qigong combines gentle motion, or physical stimulation, with breathing techniques, and visualization/relaxation techniques to achieve substantial health benefits. There are over 7,000 Qigong therapies in the Chinese Medica (the Traditional Chinese Book of Medicine). Tai Chi, again, is a highly sophisticated general health Qigong practice, therefore this Qigong research may be relevant to the Tai Chi’s applications for those in menopause. An interesting study at healthy.net, revealed that sex hormone levels may be balanced by the practice of Qigong exercises (http://www.healthy.net/scr/article.asp?id=382). The report stated, “…female sex hormone (estrogen) levels tend to increase in men and decrease in women. Three studies indicate that qigong exercise can reverse this trend. The effect of qigong exercise on plasma sex hormone levels was determined for hypertensive men and women.

The sex hormones levels were measured before and after qigong practice for one year…” Results showed that high estrodiol levels in men lowered to near normal, and low estrodial levels in women raised to near normal after qigong practice. Medline Plus, a service of the National Instututes of Health’s March 3, 2004 update discussed the problems with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which had been the main treatment for menopausal symptoms. But in the update, Medline Plus, explains, “…the results of a major study -- called the Women's Health Initiative -- has led physicians to revise their recommendations. In fact, this important study was stopped early because the health risks outweighed the health benefits.

Women taking the hormones did see some benefits. But they greatly increased their risk for breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots.” The Medline article goes on to offer non-drug alternatives to reduce menopausal symptoms that included “yoga, tai chi, or meditation.” (See entire article at: www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000894.htm) In a great article at webmd.com, Dr. Herbert Benson, head of hypertension studies at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital and author of “The Relaxation Response,” goes further to suggest that Tai Chi’s moving meditation is “…vitally important in PMS, infertility, hot flashes, insomnia,…" (Read the entire article at: my.webmd.com/content/article/25/1728_57992.htm).

Dr. Benson’s comments illustrate the vast multi-dimensional possibilities that Tai Chi offers everyone’s health on so many levels. The purpose of this article is not to prescribe treatments for you, but to help you expand your dialogue with your health professional to explore more possibilities for your health. However, the purpose here is also to encourage physicians to begin demanding more focused medical research on what Tai Chi may offer their patients on many levels. Currently all alternative therapies research is only about one half of only one-percent of the National Institutes of Health’s budget, meaning that Tai Chi research is only a tiny fraction of that tiny fraction. Given the emerging possibilities of benefit Tai Chi is showing already with such limited research, this is inexcusable.

Massive resources should be used to fully explore what Tai Chi offers, so that all hospitals can not only offer classes, but prescribe them. Tai Chi should be covered by medical insurance and national health insurance programs. The future is ours, by beginning to demand of our health system a natural and cost effective approach to our health and well-being. Share this article widely with everyone you know, but especially your health professionals, and your local media’s health reporters. Stop Eating Like a Bird

This was me for years. I ballooned to 220lb while on diets. I didn't start to lose weight until I started to eat smaller meals, more often. In six months I dropped under 200lb, without exercise. But, it wasn't the number - it was the way I looked.

My body tightened. I dropped several pant sizes. My legs are firmer. I've also noticed that I am sleeping better. But, the more I lose, the more I want to do - so I will start exercising soon. Before I do I will take measurements of myself, because I know that muscle weighs more than fat.

I use to be very athletic, and looked as good at 160lb, as many women look at 130lb.

Why Eating More Often Will Help You Lose Weight

People will often look at me in disbelief when I tell them they are not eating often enough. The logical mind wants to think, "If I skip meals ... I am bound to lose weight." WRONG!!!!! There has been a ton of research that has proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the body gears down and hangs on when put under this type of stress.

I call it "starvation mode." When your body isn't receiving nutrients every few hours, your metabolism drops into low, low gear; basically, the rate it maintains while you are asleep. In that state, your body is ultra-conservative. It uses energy very efficiently, and if any nutrients come in, they are immediately stored for fear that it won't be getting any more for another long period of time. Hence, you will not lose weight and, in fact, may even gain.

On the other hand, if you were to begin eating 5-6 small meals every day, in a week or two your body will be convinced that "more nutrients are always coming ... on a regular basis", and you will begin to drop weight almost effortlessly. Hard to believe but its true.

Now, an important key is to eat the right small meals every 2-3 hours. You can't be eating fast food or double fudge brownies and expect the weight to fall off. Of course you need to eat a balanced healthy diet consisting of 7-8 servings of fruit and vegetables, 2-4 servings of grains, 1-3 servings of good fats, 2-3 servings of dairy and 2-3 servings of lean protein. The actual reality is that you will be eating more food then you have probably ever eaten but, because it is the nutrient-packed food that your body needs, you will lose weight with relative ease.

So, let's go through a typical day's food plan.

7 a.m. - 8 oz glass of purified water, 1-2 eggs, 1 slice hardy multigrain bread, 1-2 teaspoons all fruit, 2 slices turkey bacon, 1 cup decaf or green tea.

Midmorning snack - 8 oz water, a small apple or 15 raw almonds.

Noon - Ideally, this is your largest meal of the day with 4-6 oz lean protein, 2-3 servings of veggies, 1/2 sweet potato or 1/2-cup brown rice and more water.

Afternoon snack - Warm or cold herbal tea, 5-7 Triscuits with a thin coating of peanut butter.
Dinner - Very large mixed green salad with all the fixings, put 2-3 oz. of lean meat on it and use balsamic vinegar and olive oil as dressing, more water.

Evening - Finally, if you so choose, an evening snack of a small container of no-fat yogurt or 5-7 strawberries cut up and mixed with 1/3 cup of no-fat cottage cheese and, of course, more water.

This may seem challenging at first, but over the course of a week or two, as you settle into this food regimen, you will notice that your energy level will markedly increase, you will not have sugar or non-healthy carb carvings and you will sleep much more soundly. Give it a try, and mark my words ... you are going to feel wonderful and lose weight to boot. Click on Fitness Tips for more information.

Osteoporosis is Not a Normal Part of Aging

My mother has one treatment a month. It is painful, and she is 'down' for three days after. In fact, it can take her a week to recover. She never took the warnings seriously. I can remember several times when she started to exercise, but then was 'too busy.' Now, it is too late. She must suffer this monthly procedure for the rest of her life - she is not 70 yet - and her father lived to 93.

Ignoring the facts and the warning signs is 'not' the way to deal with this debilitating and painful chronic disease.

Osteoporosis And The Facts

Osteoporosis is called the silent thief because you do not experience any symptoms, the first time you know about it is when a bone snaps unexpectedly. Osteoporosis means "porous bones" and it is a condition where the skeleton becomes very fragile and the bones break easily. Simple things can cause a bone to break, such as stepping off a curb, sneezing, being hugged or even bending down to pick something up. Breakages are mainly in the hips, spine and wrist and effects mainly women but men can have it as well.

Nowadays you can be tested to see what your bone mass is like and because of more knowledge you can delay the onset of osteoporosis with diet and exercise earlier in your life.

You might think that the skeleton does nothing else but holds you up but it is every bit as dynamic as other tissues, bone responds to the pull of muscles and gravity, repairs itself, and constantly renews itself. The skeleton also protects the internal organs, as well as allowing you to move about.

After the age of 30, the bone starts to breakdown and outpaces formation. The volume of the bone remains the same, but it's density declines.

Calcium intake is important to build bone but you also need vitamin D to help the body absorb the calcium. Vitamin D is produced by the skin in sunlight or can be found in many foods, such as in milk products and many breakfast cereals. It has also been found that Magnesium and Vitamin K can also assist in the reduction of bone loss. Vitamin K can be found in greens, whereas Magnesium is found in small quantities in a variety of foods, so eating a varied, healthy diet should provide what you require.

A lifelong habit of weight-bearing exercise, such as walking or biking, will also help build and maintain strong bones. The greatest benefit as you grow older is that physical fitness reduces the risk of fracture, because it gives you better balance, muscle strength, and agility, making falls less likely. Exercise also provides many other life-enhancing psychological and cardiovascular benefits.

You don't have to do too much, to get the most benefit from exercise. It is suggested that 30 minutes brisk walking five days a week is all you need. Add in a little weightlifting, and that's even better. The reason behind this recommendation is that the flexing of bones during exercise is thought to prompt the body to lay down more calcium in the bones. It's always smart to ask your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you already have osteoporosis or other health problems.

It is important to ensure that when exercising the body has enough nutrients to build muscle otherwise minerals could be leeched from the bone making the bone more susceptible to osteoporosis. It is therefore important that you do not exercise on an empty stomach.

Osteoporosis is a problem that can affect anyone in their later years and you should do all that you can to keep your bones strong.

Be Active - Be Healthy

Many people are surprised to learn that aging does not cause health problems. More and more reports are proving that it is our sedentary lifestyle - not our age - that causes most of our health problems.

In fact, many of today's 20something generation are suffering from 'old people's ailments, because they are sedentary....and many older people are fit and healthy because they've maintained a healthy and active lifestyle.

Inactivity, Not Aging Causes Most of our Health Problems

Copyright © 2005 Raymond Kelly
Just like the young, older people can gain many benefits from exercising. Life can be made a lot easier through improvements in strength, balance, coordination, and mobility. If the person has not exercised for a while, they must start slow. Even walking 10 minutes per day will give them great benefits.

Weight training is also a great option. Start them on a 20 minute program (3-4 exercises), and increase them from there as they adapt. Keep sets at 2-3, reps at 10-15, and the rest interval between sets at 90 seconds.

The facts:
· Improvements in fitness and oxygen consumption with training are similar for younger or older men and women. Though, an older person will generally start at a lower level and peak at a lower level than a younger person.
· Older subjects show greater gains in muscle oxidative enzyme activities.
· Aging appears neither to impair the ability to improve muscle strength nor prevent muscle growth.
· Exercise can help arthritic patients by increasing strength and mobility.
· Older people who exercise have:
· Higher VO2max values and half the expected decrease in VO2max due to age
· Higher HDL cholesterol and lower LDL cholesterol
· Enhanced glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity
· Greater strength, reaction time, and a lower risk of falling
· Increased bone density (reduced chance of osteoporosis)

Guidelines:

· Always get a medical examination and clearance before starting an exercise program.
· All equipment should be safe and inspected regularly for defects.
· Training equipment should be located in an uncrowded area.
· There must be adequate supervision by an experienced and registered trainer to ensure correct technique is used.
· Programs should start with regular stretching and strengthening exercises, with a progression to more dynamic aerobic activities. Cycling and swimming are recommended over jogging.
· Older people are generally less tolerant of environmental stress so restrict training in extreme temperatures.
· Until they are experienced in weight training, only use exercises that require them to keep both feet on the ground (e.g. Squats instead of Lunges). This will reduce their risk of falling and injuring themselves.
· Ensure all abdominal work is done on the floor and not on the Swiss Ball.
· Only light lifting should be done above the head.
· No isometric exercises.

Frequent Sex and Good Health

Sex has anti aging properties. It is something that many people enjoy - and others just 'don't get it.' Sex is intimate. It should be a shared experience between two people. Unfortunately, many people over 40 have warped ideas of what sex is, or should be. To make matters worse, they are afraid to explore their sexuality. There is nothing taboo with sex - it is something personal and intimate to be shared between two people in love.

Frequent Sex and Good Health

Individuals engaged in active lifestyles like exercising, eating right foods, and taking vitamins should also involve frequent sex in their health regimen. While the degree of sexual activity in one's health is not a principal topic of research, many studies suggest that safe sex can do wonders for one's overall health. Safe sex practiced in a loving, intimate relationship has numerous health benefits like improved cholesterol levels and increased blood circulation. It also encourages the flow of testosterone, a hormone that plays an important role in the immune system.

Sexual intercourse burns about 200 calories, the same number of calories can be achieved by spending 15 minutes in a treadmill. In addition, sex encourages the production of endorphins, the body natural painkiller. These substances, enables a state of bliss and frees people from stress and anxiety. These factors can lead to feelings of happiness, greater health and may slowdown the aging process. An active sex life may lead to improved health and enable people to live longer and happier lives.

For Him

A medical study published by Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), found out that frequent ejaculation resulting from sexual activity may help protect the prostate from cancer. This finding supports a smaller study in Australia from 2003 that found out that men in 20's who ejaculated more than five times a week were less likely to developing prostate cancer than their counterparts who ejaculated four to seven times a month. Specialists add that ejaculating regularly might lower the risk of cancer because cancer-causing substances are flushed out of the body in the seminal fluid instead of being trapped in the prostate. In addition, researchers in Queens University concluded that by having sex three or more times a week, men may cut heart attack or stroke rates by almost half. However, having sex with multiple partners may raise a man's risk of prostate cancer to up to 40% because his the risk of contracting sexual infection increases.

For Her

Sexual activity may also help prevent endometriosis, a common gynecological condition that affects about 89 million women around the world. This condition occurs when the tissue lining inside a woman's uterus grown in other places like the ovaries or the fallopian tube. This growth can cause pelvic pain and may lead to infertility. A study by the journal of Gynecologic and Obstetric Investigation, concluded that women who were sexually active during their menstruation were 15 times less likely to develop endometriosis than women who abstained from sex during periods. The contractions of the uterus during orgasm may help flush away menstrual debris out of the uterus. Sexual activity among women also prompts the production of estrogen which can act as a painkiller and reduce the pain of Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS).

Sexual intercourse is not just the insertion of a man's erect penis into a woman's vagina. It is a process of physical intimacy that strengthens the bond among lovers. Understanding safe sex and sex within marriage may lead to improved health and fruitful marriages.

What Is A Certified Life Coach?

It is possible that, while searching for a personal life coach, you came across an advertisement or two with someone claiming to be a "certified life coach". Many who claim to be a certified life coach end up charging more money than non-certified life coaches. With that in mind, is it worth paying the extra money to hire a certified life coach? In many ways it is, although it might not come up in your situation. Before understanding if it's worth it or not, you must understand what a life coach certificate means.

It is possible, though not advisable, to start up a professional life coach business without being a certified life coach. All it really takes is getting people to hire you as a life coach, either via the internet or from seeing an advertisement in the newspaper. Once you do that, you are a professional life coach. However, a certified life coach has special training. It takes a lot of work to know what to say in different situations and to know how to help a person get past things in their lives that are holding them back. A life coach institute will offer training that can help a person be prepared for any number of experiences that someone who simply "proclaimed" themselves a life coach simply doesn't have. With that said, you can see that it would be a good idea to make sure that you hire a certified life coach rather than a non-certified life coach.

After the dust clears, training is what separates a certified life coach from someone without a life coach certificate. Going to a life coach institute allows a person to get over a year of training and experience that they simply wouldn't get otherwise. So, if you're looking to hire a personal life coach, it's worth it to pay the extra money for an expert.

After listening to Terri Cadiente's radio show about Los Angeles life coaching insights, Liz Quillnan was motivated to finally take action and achieve strength with grace in her life.

Single Parenting - How To Bond With Your Child As A Single Parent

The issue of single parenting often evokes plenty of debate as to whether children are more negatively impacted in a single parent home as opposed to having two parents.

In reality, children who grow up with only one parent in the home are said to become more independent and are better prepared to fend for themselves in adult life. This view will definitely stir up plenty of debate.

Single Parent Dating

One of the biggest issues of single parenting is a parent who re-enters the dating scene. The impact on their children can be very dramatic especially if a child has already experienced a two parent household and was close to the parent who is no longer a part of it.

The welcome reception for the new person in their life can be best described as being hot. A parent who introduces a new member to the family may often times have to deal with jealous feelings from their child. A child now faces the prospect of competing for their sole parent's affection which can lead to tense times.

Single Parenting Tips

Let's take a look at some things you can do as a single parent to form a more harmonious relationship with your child:

- Show them you love them every day. This could be through simply telling them every day or by some action. Maybe leaving a note on their pillow after they leave for school or in their school bag.

- Encourage your child daily. Let them know they are above average and they are doing a great job. On the other hand, be careful not to "sugar coat" the situation too much and if they break the rules then let them know also.

- Set rules the child must abide by. Routine is important in a two parent household but it's just as vital in a single parent home. Eating family dinners is crucial to a home's routine. Make sure you sit down together at least once a day to eat. Evening time is ideal but if your situation allows, try and sit down for breakfast together as well.

- Don't be afraid to let your child help out around the home. If they are old enough then encourage them to help keep the home and yard clean. When a child is given responsibility, in most cases they will thrive.

The Beauty Of Being A Single Parent

All I ever hear is how difficult it is to be a single parent. Almost every single parent I've ever met laments about how terribly difficult it is. I'm a single parent and don't find it to be all that difficult. It is what it is. Parenting isn't the easiest thing I've ever done, but hey, what is when you first start out? I liken this whole situation to when I quit smoking. When I was "trying" to quit, all I heard was how difficult it was going to be. Everyone had an opinion. It wasn't until I let go of all of that and said to myself how simple it was going to be, that I quit. In my mind being a single parent is the same. And so far (my daughter's now 3) it's not that difficult.

In my opinion it would be much harder to have arguments with my ex in front of my daughter, than it is being a single parent. My point is that being a single parent is as difficult as you think it is. If you think about how hard it is, and how you wish the situation were different than it is, guess what? The situation is going to be difficult and hard. You can think about your situation in the opposite way.

You can spend your mental energy focusing on what's great about the situation. Such as how much time you get to spend with your child and how blessed you are that he or she came into you life. As you know, having a child incarnate into this world is an outright blessing, and it should be treated as such.

The bottom line is that being a single parent isn't difficult for me because I spend my energy focusing on what's great about it, rather than what's not so great. At the end of the day, it is what it is, and the important thing is you're child. Harrison Ford hit the nail on the head when he said, "Parenting is an impossible job at any age." I would also add, whether there are one or two parents present. It's an impossible job, so all we can do is the best we can.

Being A Single Parent - The Opportunity Of A Lifetime

How many times have you heard how difficult being a single parent is? You hear it all the time, right? Well, I'm a single parent and I feel honored and privileged to be one. In fact I consider it to be what I was born to do. Is it frustrating at times? Of course, but I've come to the conclusion that the frustration comes from being a parent. It has nothing to do with the fact that I'm a single parent. In reality, these are all just distinctions that we as humans make.

We say as a culture that there should be a mother and father raising the child, and that's the best way to go. But why do we assume that fact is true. I mean twenty-five years ago it would have been taboo to suggest that a lesbian couple adopt a baby. Today this kind of act is more and more acceptable (as it should be). This type of scenario shows me that we're growing as a culture. We're beginning to realize that the most important thing is that the child is loved, and grows up in a loving home.

The title of this article could have easily been: Being a parent…the opportunity of a lifetime, because in my mind the term "single parent" is just another distinction that this culture makes. It makes no difference if there are one, two, four, or ten people involved in the child's life, the important thing is that the child is loved.

My suggestion is simply to stop thinking of being a single parent as some sort of burden, and start to see all of the positive aspects of it. Dwelling on what we view as wrong, will only help to create more of what's wrong, and that's no good for the most important person in this whole scenario. Your child! The bottom line is that being a parent is the opportunity of a lifetime, whether your single or with a mate.

Parenting After Divorce

Once you have finished gathering all your divorce information, sought all the divorce advice that was out there, found divorce help by hiring an attorney and financial planner… after you have learned everything there is to know about how to get a divorce there is one decision that has no fast, cut-and-dried answers: how to raise your children in two households.

Custody of the children can be a major talking point when negotiating a divorce settlement. Depending on how near or far from one another the parents choose to live, it is possible for children to spend equal time with both of them. Once the marital home is sold (if this is what you decide to do) you may work it out so that both spouses can live in smaller, separate homes within your children’s school district. Furthermore, alimony payments can help out with the mortgage.

What ever you and your spouse may do or argue about, don’t sucked into the trap of neglecting your children. As a parent, the kindest thing you can do is to arrange a quick and easy divorce lasting from a few weeks to a month.

If the circumstances of your situation allow it, joint physical custody of your children may be the healthiest option. A child may struggle to understand the mere concept of divorce; all the more so when coping with divorce. When both parents are available to their children, life after divorce can be a time of healing.

Rebuilding Your Finances After Divorce

Generally speaking, when it comes to women and divorce, financial preparedness is the key to an easy divorce… or at least as close to it as you can get. It may be true that men may find themselves set back, financially, after a divorce. This is why there are attorneys who specifically offer services pertaining to divorce for men.

However, more often than not, women find themselves in dire need of divorce help due to the fact that their male counterparts generally make more money and have more financial power than they do. This can be quite unfair, particularly when women usually gain custody of the children and naturally incur higher expenses.

After a divorce, a woman’s cost of living can increase dramatically, hence the reason why court-ordered alimony and child support payments most often go to women; even so, experts report that the average woman experiences a 45% decrease in her standard of living after going through a divorce. Meanwhile, the average man experiences a 15% improvement in his standard of living (Long Island University’s National Center for Women & Retirement Research).

Given these eye-opening statistics, it is no wonder that women are scouring the Internet for divorce information and divorce help. By learning how to get a divorce and by seeking divorce help, spouses who find themselves on the short end of the financial stick are finding ways to protect their assets and to live a reasonable life after divorce.

My Husband is Cheating on Me

It's difficult when you are in a relationship with a cheating husband. None of us entered into marriage with the thought that we could end up in a loveless, cheating relationship, but for far too many people it happens anyway. Before we discuss what can be done about your cheating husband we first need to make sure that he is actually cheating on you. If you know for sure, somehow, that your husband is cheating on you then this is really not something that you will need, but you may find it interesting anyway.

Most cheating husbands tend to follow in the same footsteps. I've never been able to really figure out why it is that they all fall into that same slot, but in almost all cases it is true. Here are the things that I have found to be true in most cases of cheating spouses. The first thing that you will probably notice is a change in the way they treat you. At first they may be showing you additional attention, usually to cover over their guilty conscience, or perhaps to justify what they are doing in some way. After time passes, however, they pull away from both you and the family. They tend to be distant and very secretive, especially about their cell phone and computer usage, and believe it or not, a surprising number of cheating spouses change the type of underwear that they wear.

Once you know for sure that your husband is cheating then you need to plan your next steps very carefully. Having the evidence necessary to catch them red handed is important, and you should have it all laid out (because they are going to lie) and the most important thing is that, if and when things get heated you need to keep your cool. It won't do you any good to strike your husband and end up going to jail, but it happens all the time. Just think it all through from the beginning to the end, and have all your bases covered.

If you suspect that your significant other is cheating on you there are ways that you can find out. You can know for sure by following the trail that they leave behind. For more information and a special report visit our website at

Surviving a Cheating Husband

What can be done about a cheating husband, and what can be done to help ease the pain? There really isn't much that you can do to help with the pain, except to give it the time that it needs to heal, and to seek out someone that you can talk to. Surviving a cheating husband is a difficult thing, and none of us went into our marriage thinking that someday it would end in this. Most of us entered into the relationship thinking that it would be the last relationship that we were ever in, but, as in the case of many marriages, infidelity entered into the picture and now you are dealing with picking up the pieces. So how can you know for sure that your husband is cheating?

Unless you have actually caught your husband cheating, or if they have admitted to it, there are some ways that you can confirm your suspicions of infidelity in your relationship. It's actually amazing that many of the people who are guilty of cheating in a relationship are actually easy to catch. This is because the signs of a cheating husband are often the same from relationship to relationship. There is typically an increase in attention shown to you, usually though presents or flowers, many times in the bedroom, but as time passes the cheater tends to pull away as their loyalty shifts from you to the other woman. They also tend to do things like changing the way they look, act or dress. This can show itself in a sudden interest in their physical appearance, going to the gym or dieting for no real reason.

Yes, surviving a cheating husband is a difficult thing, but not knowing for sure if they are cheating is even more difficult. So before you leap, make sure you look, and have your evidence ready so that you can make a case for yourself.

If you suspect that your significant other is cheating on you there are ways that you can find out. You can know for sure by following the trail that they leave behind. For more information and a special report visit our website at

Relighting Fantasies with Mature Erotica

Eroticism and sexuality are reaching new dimensions nowadays, together with the appearance of a great range of contents and publications that are destined to promote them at high levels. Erotica publications are gaining more popularity based on the fact that eroticism and the sexual act are presented through a mature perspective, a perspective that focuses, besides on the sexual act itself, on passion, feelings, attitudes, sensations and other types of stimulants that have specific roles in intimate relations.

Mature erotica – what is it? Is mature erotica sexual explicit content destined to mature individuals? Is mature erotica a sort of literature, art that appeals to adults? Let’s put it this way: mature erotica is a world of passion, but a soft passion that is expressed through more tender actions and relations between mature partners. A world of sensations, yet more delicate sensations that have grown and developed in years. Erotica publications present a wide range of categories that include women erotica, erotica for men, classic erotica and mature erotica, to name a few. Mature erotica is probably the most specialized one as it presents sexual acts and activities from a more mature, complex perspective.

But why “mature”? What is the main difference between mature erotica and other similar contents? First of all, an experienced individual experiences sexual activities and lives the intimate relations differently than an individual who is a debutant in this field. Sure, the perceptions regarding the sexual activity and sexuality itself change with the passing of the years and with gaining more experience. And this is precisely what mature erotica does: it presents the sexual act and its complex context through a mature perception. Sex is not just sex; it is not a simple, dynamic, physical action. Sexual activity implies senses, implies fantasies, openness, feelings and creativity – and all these are described with detail in mature erotica contents.

Mature erotica has many fans and admirers, many readers and viewers. From poems to short stories and novels, the wide range of mature erotica contents attracts adults that are willing to rediscover their passion and to relight their sexual desire. As it expresses the sexual act as a beautiful, wonderful and complex experience, adults are invited to live this experience in its complexity, to release their passion and fantasies and to literally live and feel the sexual act.

Mature erotica appeals both to men and women, as it manages to present fantasies in an appealing, sensual way, a way that promotes sexuality only in combination with other types of stimulants (besides the strictly sexual ones). Fantasies are let free, minds are let open. Age is of no relevance, since the only thing that matters is the sexual desire and attitude. An attitude that combines sensuality and senses with sexual stimulants, emotions and feelings – this is the base of mature erotica.

Choose To Be Happy

You can choose to be happy regardless of what you are currently experiencing in your life. Yes sometimes it can be difficult especially if you are dealing with personal challenges. However happiness is a choice; you can teach yourself to choose to be happy and that in turn will better your life in all areas.

People tend to rely on others to make them happy. While it is true if you are around someone who is constantly in a good mood; it is contagious and you will become excited and happy because you will pick up on that persons energy. Just as if you are around negative people who are always upset for one reason or another; you will pick up on this energy as well. However you can choose the emotions you want to experience; if people you associate with can influence our emotions you can also influence other peoples emotions. Would you rather be around someone who constantly drags you down with negative emotions; or would you rather be around someone who is positive about everything and that energy rubs off on you.

You can learn to choose your emotions; regardless of your current life experiences. No matter what you are experiencing your outside experiences have not control over your current emotions; unless of course you allow them too. You can put this to practice try smiling right now, how do you feel? The minute you put that smile on your face your body feels better and your posture improves. However if you put a frown on your face the opposite happens; you do not feel good and you do not feel great. It all boils down to a choice; what are you going to choose?

Many people tend to let their circumstances influence their thoughts and feelings. People tend to react towards life according to what they are facing. We do not take the time to relax and think about how our thoughts influence what we are currently experiencing in life; we just tend to get upset and angry because things are not going the way we believe they should be. Life is just a choice you can choose to believe and understand that anything you are currently experiencing in your life; you brought it to yourself by the constant thoughts and feelings you focus on.

Remember you can always choose to happiness it is something we can all learn. All you have to do when you are feeling down and upset. Put on a song that you love; before you know it you will begin singing along and dancing. This will switch your feelings and emotions and then your current experiences will not have an influence on your thoughts. This is all a choice; you can either begin taking action and taking control of your thoughts and feelings. Or you can continue living life letting your current circumstances have total control over your life.

Are you going to continue being a victim to life; or are you going to choose to be a victor and believe your happiness is totally up to you?

Single 40-somethings

With the divorce rate around 50%, there is a growing number of single 40-somethings . People get divorced more often. Divorce was notan option fifty years ago. (and many women bore the emotional pain to prove it.)

40-somethings singles are lrdd likely to remarry. People typically remarried soon after being widowed in the past, today people are embracing the single life instead . The growing number of 'first wives' are taking the initiative to 'live' and enjoy themselves after slaving to build someone else's career for 20 years.

The population of single 40-somethings will not drop in the near future. We are living longer. We are wealthier. We have more education. In essense, we have the power to retain our freedom and enjoy the 'freedoms' our grandfathers did. However, we do not need to endure the stigma those same grandfather's put on the women they dallied with.

The reality is - single is no longer a disease. A single person doesn't need to live without a social life, and a woman is no longer defined by the man who pays the bills.

Physically Fit Older Women - It Is Worth The Effort To Stay In Shape

It is a myth that younger women always command the attention because of their youth and appearance. Of course, the younger a person is they will tend to be in better physical shape just because they are more active. But I have found that myself and other men that I know really appreciate being around a middle-aged woman who has taken care of herself both physically and has a professional career. There is something special about an older woman that is hard to put into words perhaps it is the wisdom that they have accumulated through the years plus their physical beauty. But make no mistake a physically attractive older woman is something many young males would be proud and honored to know.

Some older women I have spoken to told me that some of the techniques they have used to keep in shape. The most common reply is they watch what they eat and never or rarely ever eat anything containing sugar or carbohydrates. Several have home exercise equipment and exercise regularly to maintain their fitness while others have success keeping their shape with just diet alone.

Portion control is also a necessity in maintaining a good physical appearance. You have to always know what you are eating and how many calories it contains. Without keeping track of what you consume you could easily end up eating way more than what you need and start putting on the pounds. To really know what you eat you have to write down what you have eaten throughout the day so you know at a glance if you have already eaten your daily caloric intake yet or not. Without a written record you may forget that you had an extra sandwich for lunch and eat too much later in the day. Your body will not forget and those extra calories will be turned into fat.

Some of the older women I have spoken with that are really into physical exercise and fitness also use nutritional supplements, such as, Goji Juice and vitamins, in addition to keeping their food intake in check. The nutritional supplements help give your body the nutrition that it needs without having to eat more food to gain the nutrients. That way you get the nutrients and not the calories.

Being in the home-based business industry I meet many older women at my gym who have a home-based business and are able to devote the time to exercising and staying physically fit and healthy.

So if you are physically attractive older women and you think that no one will look at you because of your age you are wrong.

Celebrating Women - National Women's History Month

The roots of National Women’s History Month began March 8, 1857, when women from New York City factories staged a protest over working conditions. International Women’s Day was first observed in 1909.

The public celebration of women's history began in 1978 as "Women's History Week" in Sonoma County, California. The week including March 8, International Women's Day, was selected. In 1981, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD.) co-sponsored a joint Congressional resolution proclaiming a national Women's History Week. In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month, and March was declared Women's History Month.

Interesting Statistics:

• Thirty-seven percent of women sixteen or older work in management, professional and related occupations, compared with thirty-one percent of men.
• Revenue for women-owned businesses in 2002 reached more than $939 billion—fifteen percent higher than 1997. There were 116,985 women owned firms with receipts of $1 million or more.
• As of November 1, 2006, there are 152 million females in the United States. That exceeds the number of males (148 million) by 4 million.
• The median annual earnings of women sixteen or older who worked year-round is $32,168 in 2005. Women earned seventy-seven cents for every dollar earned by men.

Two major factors contributed to the emergence of women's history. The women's movement of the sixties caused women to question their invisibility in traditional American history texts. The movement also raised the aspirations as well as the opportunities of women, and produced a growing number of female historians. Carroll Smith-Rosenberg, one of the early women's historians, stated, "…without question, our first inspiration was political. Aroused by feminist charges of economic and political discrimination . . . we turned to our history to trace the origins of women's second-class status."

Why Do Some Ladies Like Younger Men These Days?

In our modern day society, everything is possible. Even in relationships things tend to be applicable. Younger men date older women or older women date younger men. Before, this scenario was unacceptable, but in today's modern society, people's perception tends to be wider.

Why do some ladies like younger men these days?

Before, older men were more appealing than younger men. However, this conception has changed a lot. The women today are more sophisticated and more independent. They see older men as boring. They do not need a father figure because they already have dads. The higher the position you have today, the lesser time you have for yourself and for others. This is one of the reasons why younger men are more appealing. They tend to know more on how to enjoy life. Women today want to be appreciated more. They want to be respected as equal to their male counterparts. This is the reason why they like younger men more. It is easy to gain the respect that you want from younger men. Another reason is that younger men think more outside of the box. They are less conservative and traditional. They appreciate women who try to reach their dreams.

Younger men are very refreshing because they can connect more to women. They play along with what a woman wants and what she usually does. Most women today are young at heart. Older women just want to have fun and a good time. Embarrassing as it may be, some women are late bloomers. Some spend their twenties being confused and finding their real self. But ten years later, they tend to know what life is all about and are ready to embrace anything in this world.

However, age should not matter for people who love one another and who enjoy each other's company. As long as you respect one another and enjoy being with that person, age should not be a factor. No one has the right to criticize when a younger woman falls in love to an older man or a young man falls in love with an older woman. As long as they want to be together and they compliment one another, there should not be any problems.

It is very fortunate to find someone who can make you happy and can make you smile even when you are alone. All this begins with one date.

Leading Cause of Death in Women Prevented with Exercise

Many research papers show that middle-aged and older women who are physically active are far less likely to suffer from heart attacks, the leading cause of death in women in America today. However, there has been very little research on the effects of physical activity during young adulthood on exercise patterns during middle and later age, and whether they influence heart attack risk in later life. Many years ago, researchers at Harvard Medical School recruited nearly 40,000 healthy female professionals, older than 45 years, for the Women's Health Study. Recent findings released from this ongoing study show that women who exercise when they are younger are far more likely to exercise when they are older and are far less likely to die of heart attacks (Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, August, 2005).

Women who exercised 12 months a year during high school years were more than twice as likely to exercise when they became middle aged and were also almost half as likely to suffer a heart attack as women who did not exercise in later life. So if you have young daughters, encourage them to start an exercise program that they can keep the rest of their lives. If you are a middle-aged woman and are not exercising regularly, get started now. It’s never to late; even 90-year-old women who begin a supervised exercise program can see dramatic strength gains in as little as six weeks.

Strength In Numbers: Boomer Women

Yes, the Baby-Boomer generation has been influencing everything in our culture ever since someone first coined the phrase. From a marketing perspective, watching this generation get older has provided us with some fascinating information, including how powerful the “women-over-50” group has become.

Women in their 50s today are in their prime. They are healthier, wealthier, and carry more influence than any other generation of women in history. So from a marketing perspective, this is a very appealing demographic for many industries. These women have both money and the time to spend it!

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Boomer Women will increase an amazing 52% in the workforce over the next few years. By 2010, there will be about 10.1 million women age 55 and older in the workforce, up from 6.4 million in 2000. Now that’s a lot of purchasing power!

So as you continue to market your products and services, make sure you are including Boomer Women in your target groups. They play a huge part in almost every big-ticket market (travel, real estate, financial services, technology, automobiles, home improvement, etc.), and will continue to do so for the next two decades. Boomer Women today are healthy and vital, and you can keep your business that way too by paying attention to this very strong, very large group of influential consumers.

Pregnancy Complications In Women Over Thirty

Pregnancy complications in women over thirty are several as age plays an important role in pregnancy. There has been a growing tendency to have children well over the age of thirty as nowadays in many families both partners are busy with their professional lives. This is also because many couples are unaware that the risks during pregnancy are higher in a women aged 30 and above. In fact these days it is not unusual for women above 40 and even 50 planning a pregnancy! It is a fact that many older women have successfully given birth to healthy babies and have had no complications, but there are a few risk factors associated with the advancing age of the expectant mother.

Factors That Affect Pregnancy In Older Women

The foremost pregnancy problem in women above 30 is getting pregnant itself! This is because fertility of women starts to decrease with age and in cases where women are over 30 they may even need fertility treatment which has the increased risk of inducing multiple pregnancies in some cases.

A few of the most common pregnancy complications in women over thirty are hypertension, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, placental abruption or placental pervia and bleeding or spotting. Women older than 35 years also have a greater risk of carrying pre-term babies, low birth weight babies and in many cases the babies may be in need of neonatal care. Older expectant women also have an increased chance of having multiple pregnancies. The incidence of fetal death during the last trimester is also high in women older than 35.

Other pregnancy complications in women over thirty include the risks of giving birth to a baby with Down's syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities. Medical tests such as amniocentesis are done to determine risks to the unborn child.

One other risk during pregnancy in older women is the effect that disease conditions of the heart, kidney, or diabetes and hypertension have on the health of the pregnant women. The chances of still birth also increase with age as does the need for a C-section.

These are just a few of the pregnancy complications in women over thirty. It gives you a general idea of some of the risk factors associated with the advancing age of the expectant mother. Remember that women from all age brackets do have their set of pregnancy complications and that despite the high risk and complications involved, many of them have ensured that they have a safe and healthy pregnancy by following the advice of their consultants and by adopting proper pregnancy planning techniques.

Most pregnancy complications in women over thirty can be prevented and the chances of a health pregnancy and birth increased by following a regime of regular nutritious meals, recommended exercise, prescribed increased intake of folic acid and other supplements and by having a positive outlook and attitude.
